Motorised bike Run-in/Break-in period?

Running it too hard can starve the rings of oil. Thus causing lock up of the piston or premature wear that shortens the life of an engine. That run in period is specified for a reason. There seems to be a trend on the internet where people swear by telling you that you don't need to run-in an engine the way the owners manuel states. But, those people won't be anywhere to be found when you ruin your engine. The break-in period is considered critical by the manufacturer.
